Define “Going Pro": What Does It Really Mean to Go Pro in 2024?

What does it really mean to “go pro”?  For most, becoming a professional at any sport conjures up images of podiums, sponsorships, and expeditions to foreign lands. But as the outdoor sports world evolves, so does the definition of success. Maybe going pro isn’t about medals and first summits.

Maybe it’s simply about building a life that keeps you connected to the outdoors and your passions.

Let me give you one personal example, in 2015 I lived in North Vancouver and worked in a popular bike shop. For context, North Vancouver is world famous for its unique mountain bike trails and is a pilgrimage made by most riders at some stage in their life. So for me, being in a position that I got to pay my bills working in an industry I love plus getting to ride my bike on world class trails on a daily basis, truly redefined what it meant to be “pro”.   So I ask, is that existence any different to a person who has created a life here in Ireland, whereby they can drop the kids off at school, pull on their trail runners, and head out for an hour in the hills? I say we are the same person.

The New Definition of "Pro"

The outdoor world is changing. The traditional idea of a professional athlete is giving way to something new.

“Going pro” today might mean living near the trails, working just enough to support your adventures, or building a life where the mountains aren’t just a once a year holiday destination but a daily experience.

Chasing the Promised Land

For those of us who love the outdoors, the mountains, rivers and oceans represent more than just a place to play—they’re a kind of promised land. They offer freedom, clarity, and a sense of belonging. I recently heard a great quote from Matt McConnell when speaking on the Trail Running Ireland Podcast  for when he gets outdoors -  “It feels like purpose, it feels like privilege, it feels like peace”.

At Pilgrim Hydration, we built our brand with this spirit in mind. Our Irish-made electrolyte powders are designed for people who dream of the next adventure, whether it’s a quiet morning on the trails, a full day of downhill riding, or a week of chasing powder in the backcountry. We created Pilgrim Hydration because we know the journey to the promised land isn’t always easy. It takes grit, determination, and a lot of love for what you do. We’re here to make it a little easier.

Define Your Adventure

So maybe “Going pro” isn’t about signing a contract...maybe it’s about creating your own contract. It’s about living the best life you can with the cards you are dealt, even if it doesn’t look like anyone else’s version of success.

Whatever it is, chase it. Seek it. Live it. And let us at Pilgrim Hydration support you along the way.
